skip to main content deluge main menu home tutorials forum account shape workshop all things midi store blog posts gym simple released on the app store today we released gym simple to the app store. about 6 months ago i started going to the gym again, i spoke to a friend who's a personal trainer and he set me up with a series of exercises to do. i would run for half an hour then do some weights. unfortunately, i have a bad memory so i'd forget the weight i should be lifting. usually i'd just try to guess - 10kg looks about right... after i found that that didn't work i started writing down my workouts in the 'notes' app on my iphone. that was much better but it was still a bit messy. i decided that enough was enough and went to the app store to find a good app for the gym. unfortunately, i was disappointed. the apps seemed to come in two flavours: overly featured: these apps try to do everything. they come pre-programmed with every exercise under the sun. they show you which muscle group each weight trains, they come with built-in workouts. for me, this was too much. i just wanted to record my workout. i didn't want the app to be full of functionality that i was never going to use. ugly or buggy: there were some simple workout apps but they were mostly horrible. gym hero has hundreds of positive reviews and seemed ok but the interface is terrible. i'm a developer and graphic designer so can't stand bad design. it also wanted to charge me for basic things like being able to change the name of a workout! more for myself than anything else i decided to try to do it properly. gym simple is a simple, easy to use, beautifully presented exercise and workout tracker. marketing your iphone game part 2 going into the unknown in the previous article we looked at ways to make an app successful. well, we looked at ways in which an app can become successful. most of the ways mentioned rely on factors outside of the developers control. in this article we will be looking at techniques which can be used and utilised by a developer to increase initial market awareness leading to boosted sales. only the most successful apps make money? there is an interesting difference in attitude of app developers to regular product developers. often i talk to developers who look at the hugely successful apps and they say that a lot of the process is luck. go viral and spread. but where did this misconception come from? is it true in any other area? it is often assumed you either have a world renowned app or an unknown app that languishes on the web somewhere. this isn’t true. though many apps do fail (they are bad, too similar or unlucky), a large number record good sales and make money without making headlines. these still make the developer money enough to continue developing. when you go down the high street you will be drawn to brands you have seen on tv or that have been recommended to you by a friend. these aren't the only shops you shop at though. people enjoy shopping and seeing what is out there, being where they look is the important thing. strategic manipulation of your app in this post i am going to be looking at three different strategies for gaining consumer interest and knowledge of your company and brand. these ideally should be used in conjunction with each other to build a strong user base to launch a new product or range from. my quest to make a messaging app for ios recently i've been designing an app which allows you to chat to people in the local area using bluetooth. as part of the project i needed to implement a chat interface similar to the standard messages app. i wanted to be able to display chats between different people using speech bubbles. i wanted to be able to send text, picture and location messages. i also needed all the messages to be backed up to a database and i needed to be able to support multiple conversations. i founds lots of different open source projects which looked promising. however each one had a little bit of useful code bundled with lots of junk. i wanted to create a record of what i found to help save people time in the future. i started off by looking for open source solutions and i found lots: making a software piano keyboard for iphone and ipad i've recently been doing a lot of working involving audio on the iphone and ipad. i thought it would be cool to make a multi-touch software keyboard. making an on-screen keyboard has two main challenges: laying out the images of the piano keys correctly and handling multiple touches accurately. laying out the keyboard: there are two ways to lay out a keyboard: programatically and manually. to lay out the keyboard manually, you would create a new view in interface builder; then add the images of the keys to the view setting their positions manually. this is easy, but it lacks flexibility. if you want to add more keys, you would need to do it manually. if you wanted to change the scale of the keyboard, again, you would have to do it manually. after some consideration, i decided to lay the keyboard out programatically. to do this, you just need to loop over the number of white keys in the keyboard. for each loop, you create a new white key image and increase it's x-position by the necessary amount. after that you add the balck keys - the position of the black key is a bit more complex to work out and will depend on the dimensions of the images you're using for the keys: coreaudio iphone creating a graphic equalizer coreaudio is really badly document. on my blog i've been trying to get some good documentation out there to help aspiring audio developers. in this blog entry i'll show you how to set up an n-band graphic equalizer using coreaudio. i'm not going to go into setting up an augraph here. for that look at my other tutorials. in this page i'm just going to explain how to use the nbandequalizer module. first do the standard setup for your module i.e. create the module, add it to the graph, set up connections to other nodes and then start the graph. calling all testers! shape workshop 2.0 is taking shape rapidly and very soon i'll need testers to help with the beta testing. if you're interested please send an email to: [email protected] with the email subject "shape workshop testing". then, when the time comes i'll send you details of where to download the new version of shape workshop. as well as getting first access to the new version which is hugely improved, all active testers will discounts on the final version when it's released. traps developers fall into #1 - flexibility bloat i thought it would interesting to write about some of the traps developers frequently fall into. hopefully, reading these articles you'll be able to avoid these development pitfalls. in software development there is always a tradeoff between flexibility and complexity. when you're designing a component to be flexible you need to think about all the possible cases where you might want to use the component in the future. rather than just writing a date you would create a date object. it's clear that this kind of abstraction will lead to more lines of code. it's also clear that, if well written, this new date object will be re-usable in other projects. as the date object develops it will become more flexible incorporating new date formats until it becomes a 1,000mb juggernaut like the drupal date module. i'm not saying that flexibility and re-usability are bad. in this article i'm going to highlight the importance of keeping things in perspective. lets look at real world example. lets say that i'm buying a car which i'm going to use to drive to the shops and back. a small cheap car could do this for $10,000. but wait! since i'm buying a car, and since i'm spending $10,000, i should probably think of other scenarios where i might use the car. what if i have a family - then i'd need a family sized car. and, what if i decide i want to go touring in south america. then i'd need a 4x4 with air conditioning. ok, while
